87 - Minimalist workout & activewear

Is chic always fleek?

Let’s talk about minimalist workout clothing brands. Our tips:

  • Celebrities get your off-the-blocks

  • Comfort keeps you going

  • But fit finishes the race

ONE TO WATCH: FULL COURT

Full Court is an independent activewear brand launched in 2014 by Marguerite Wade. Full Court began as a tennis-based line and alternative to a lackluster selection of women's gear.

Moisture wicking, odor resistant and breathability, matched with technical fabrics in colors to love, Full Court is made for all athletes, and activewear aficionados alike.

ON THE BENCH: Bjorn Borg

Today, all of our clothing is either made from at least 70% more sustainable materials or supports Better Cotton and its mission to help cotton communities survive and thrive while protecting and restoring the environment.

Help us work for a better future by planning your wardrobe and your purchases, by buying high-quality products that can be used for many years, and by handing in or recycling when the product has reached its end of life

COACH CORNER: OUR THOUGHTS

Wow or wow! This is easily the most exciting (and oversubscribed) markets in sport.

The number of great brands in this area is phenomenal (you can check out the list later).

Current brands just can’t take a break, never mind falling asleep like Bjorn Borg above.

Bjorn Borg is good with a particular style that suits a lot of people, but they haven’t adapted to this fast growing market. Take a look at Full Court - brilliant, thought-provoking designs in tennis. Bjorn Borg should have home-court advantage in this space, but they are being aced by the rookies.

Prism are a fantastic little brand out of London. The one thing that London brands get right is multi-culturalism. Prism have this beautiful suite of designs for any lady of any colour that will make them pop.

Now that these start-up brands are in the race, how do they continue to be great. We never think marketing is a problem for these brands, they are fantastic at generating publicity. Where they normally fail is comfort and fit. Spend 1-2% of your revenue on comfort & fit and bring in a comfort & fit expert into your brand, preferably on the payroll.

These functions turn you from a luxury item, always on the wish list, to a staple in the wardrobe. Lululemon, Sweaty Betty are fantastic examples if you want to get big. Also, few are tackling gender and / or LGBTQ+ well (see image above); a possible area of opportunity.
