OUR FUTURE STAR: Beijing 2008

Lenovo’s design, the “Cloud of Promise,” was chosen over 300 competitor themes and will be carried by torchbearers around the world in the Olympic Torch Relay preceding the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

The Lenovo design team brought great passion and strong professional capability and experience to create the “Cloud of Promise” themed torch, which marries modern technology and Olympic spirit with the Chinese traditional culture.

ONE TO WATCH: Tokyo 2020

The simple structures are designed in the shape of cherry blossom (sakura), a flower which is immediately identified with, and cherished in Japan for its seasonal beauty and symbolism of renewal. The design was inspired by Yoshioka’s visit to Fukushima Prefecture in 2015, an area that faced a monumental reconstruction programme following the Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami in 2011.

As part of the reconstruction efforts, the designer held a drawing workshop with children from the affected area. He saw the spirit of the local people and their optimism for the future projected in the children’s vibrant cherry blossom drawings..

ON THE BENCH: Paris 2024

Designing the Olympic torch is a designer's dream: a dream that only comes true once in a lifetime, like a miraculous encounter with History. As ritualistic as it is magical, the torch is a mythical object. As a symbol of cohesion and sharing, it is the veritable key to opening the Games. It will cross thousands of kilometers, passed from hand to hand, over land and sea. For Paris 2024, and for the first time in its history, it will play with perfect symmetry to better express a message of equality. I wanted it to be extremely pure, iconic, and almost essential. Simple like a hyphen and fluid like a flame...

COACH CORNER: OUR THOUGHTS

Mathieu, unfortunately you have missed the target.

Take a look at the past 5 Olympic Torch designs (Olympic Torch Designs). They are iconic, and most importantly represent the country or city the Olympics and Paralympics are hosted in. In Mathieu’s description, there is no mention of the history of Paris, or the future of Paris.

Ok, an Eiffel Tower is cheesy, but come on, make me want to fly there to watch, spectate or take-part.

We are not world renowned designers, but at least you can tell which city the Olympics are held in, in our attempt above.
