COACH CORNER: OUR THOUGHTS
3D printed shoes have been strutting the catwalk quite regularly over the past 3 to 5 years, but they have always been restricted to formal wear.
Now, it’s sneakers time.
Look, sneakers are fashion, and we get it, who are we to comment on fashion, but sneakers are also functional. I.e. pretty much all of those buying sneakers are thinking that they will be comfortable and they can wear them outdoors. This means three things, after eye-appeal:
Fit good
Feel good
Handle moisture (internally and externally)
That’s it - not that many boundaries for a creative. If the goal of fashion is to be worn eventually, then that’s all we ask for.
So ASSA are one of the best up & coming design studios in the world. This particular design challenges fit, feel and fashion in an unusual & cool way. Their silhouette also handles the environmental elements.
Puffer Sneakers - the same, but more fashion than inspiring. Zellerfield is one of our favourite designers / platforms. They will hit if out of the park soon.
Clippers by Namesake? We love namesake, and these did look good down the catwalk, but the up-turned toe would make water or dirt slide towards the foot. The integrated sole would catch stones, mud and eventually lose it cushion. And the “flaps” would catch on everything. The question is, is the appeal of these sneakers enough to make Namesake a household brand? Not in our opinion.
What’s the future direction of fashion sneakers? We would lean heavily on:
Bio-mimetics - genetic differences in animals that inspire design (so much still to explore here)
DNA - customised to your DNA
Exo-skeletons - enhance human behaviour
Our image above is a combination of all three: using the human skeleton (one of the strongest / flexible structures that helps us walk everyday), and the person’s DNA to create a shoe that compliments their own skeletal structure.
