NIKE: Women’s world cup jerseys revealed

The 2023 Women’s World Cup is just around the corner, and Nike has just presented an official look at the kits for the nations of Australia, Brazil, Canada, England, France, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Nigeria, Norway, Portugal, and the USA ahead of the official kick-off.

Nike: New Premier League Ball

Meet the new Nike Flight Ball, with 30% truer flight than its Nike predecessor.

1700 lab hours. 800 soccer players. 68 iterations. 1 robotic leg. In order to improve the ball the world loves, we needed data—and a lot of it. So we tracked the kicks of elite players around the world, capturing, well, everything—from rate of spin to speed and angle of flight. Then we recreated those conditions with a robotic leg that could test the tiniest variations in design tirelessly. The result? A ball with 30% truer flight than our previous ball.

It's what we heard from soccer players was most important, and it’s what we’ve created with the Nike Flight Ball. The breakthrough Aerowsculpt technology uses features on the surface of the ball to help air move around it more easily, much like the dimples on a golf ball. That means less wobble in the air and a more stable, predictable flight path than the Nike Merlin.

Unlike a traditional ball that might have up to 32 panels, we designed the Nike Flight Ball with only 4. They are fuse-welded rather than stitched, which means fewer stiff seams and a prominent sweet spot. Then we added a 3D ACC (All Conditions Control) ink on the surface to create a consistent touch that we found soccer players love.

Nike: It’s a female-only boot

Ahead of the impending Women’s World Cup, Nike lift the veil on the latest silo to be added to its ranks: the Phantom Luna. It’s been designed with a female-first mindset, but that’s not to say it’s a female-only boot…

As the women’s game continues to grow, so to does the support it receives, and this has been notable in the last few years through product innovation. Until recently, football boots have always been designed with men in mind, modelled, shaped and designed for the males foot. But there’s a massive difference between the female and male biology, and that’s also apparent in the shape of feet. So, switching things up and taking a ‘Led by her, designed for all’ approach, Nike introduce the Phantom Luna.

Saudi Soccer League buying the best players

Not strictly sports product news, but juicy all the same.

The Saudi Soccer League has coordinated a Public Investment Fund to offer huge paydays to some of the biggest sports stars in the world if they join Saudi Arabia’s best teams.

In a similar fashion to the Saudi-financed campaign to dominate the golf industry through the new LIV series, the new plan in Saudi’s football league has been supported at the highest levels by the Saudi government and is being financed by the kingdom’s huge sovereign wealth fund.

The fund will look to turn the country’s domestic league into a destination for top talent and to do so, Saudi clubs have begun approaching world-famous stars with some of the highest annual salaries in sports history; deals that could reach wages of up to $1 billion for foreign ballers.

In 2022, former Manchester United and Real Madrid star, Cristiano Ronaldo, joined Saudi club Al-Nassr in a deal that is reported to be worth $200 million per season. And while Al-Nassr just missed out on the league title, those running the Saudi league have stated that Ronaldo’s presence in the league alone was a victory in itself after bringing a new wave of attention to the country’s top division.

More recently, fresh links have surfaced of famous players who could be making their way to the Saudi league. Lionel Messi, who led Argentina to the World Cup title, has been linked with a move to the division, while French baller N’Golo Kante is also linked with a move to the league. However, the next star that has been confirmed to move to Saudi to play next season is French star Karim Benzema who has agreed to leave Real Madrid for a nine-figure deal.
