50 - Megatrend: Cycling Aerodynamics Hot Right Now

Seems as if we actually understand aerodynamics in cycling now

The science of aerodynamics of cycling has been around for years, but it seems as if there is a new generation of designers trying to change the game.

PS: Look at number 5 - it’s fun and the opposite of aerodynamics

Stromm: A Track Bike for the New Era

Ben is a professional aerodynamicist with over a decade of experience designing high-performance vehicles for the aerospace industry, with a long time interest and focus in the low-speed regime of aerodynamics most relevant to bicycle design. His airfoil designs and expertise have been used in and contributed to numerous successful sub-, supersonic, and vertical lift aircraft, high performance racing cars, and several bicycles, and he holds several patents for novel aerodynamic devices.

Ben has launhed Stromm on kickstarter. The Stromm is designed to be the fastest when it has a rider on it: minimize the system drag of a rider on the bicycle:

  • Sloping top tube and seat post design creates vortices that keep air attached to rider's back longer delaying separation and turbulence and reducing drag

  • Fork and seatstays encourage better airflow over rider's legs

  • Seat tube creates propulsive lift when in the influence of rider's legs

  • Wide fork and seatstay minimize effects of wheel differences - any well-designed wheel is fast with this frame

Road.cc Spot BMC Aero Prototype at Dauphine

Road.cc is a fantastic resource for all things cycling, in a recent article they spotted the latest aerodynamic offering from BMC.

β€œArguably, the biggest difference from the existing Timemachine is the flared fork that wouldn’t look out of place on a gravel or all-road bike. We’ve seen plenty of brands opting for the same philosophy ever since that Lotus Hope track bike decided that going narrower isn’t always the fastest.

BMC was one of the first to take advantage of the relaxation of the UCI’s 3:1 ruling (where the depth of frame elements couldn't be more than three times with width) and has kept the super deep head tube and bulky bottom bracket areas (shown below) that we’ve seen become more and more popular on aero bikes of late. Just look at the size of this bottom bracket shell and the flared chainstays.

Kammtail tube shapes – aerofoil profiles with the rear end chopped off – have also been used throughout so we can look forward to plenty of claims of how slippery this frame is compared with its rivals.”

Speeco launch $2000+ aerobars

The TTX will not just give you some marginal gains, it will give you significant gains. The direct effect have been measured in the windtunnel to give an advantage between 1.4 and 5.9% on the CDA value of the tested rider. But we do not believe this is actually the biggest gain, with the position and cups made especially for you and your position, it will make holding your most aerodynamic position easier and more comfortable than ever.

The TTX is 100% UCI legal, there is written prove from the UCI that it is allowed in competition.

Triangle wheels, Square wheels, Ice Wheels - The Opposite of Aerodynamics

The Q YouTube Channel is super fun. The Q experiments will everything and tries to defy logic with weird and wacky designs. His latest are these triangular wheels but also check out his tennis ball wheels, ice wheels, square wheels and many more.

If you are a designer you could get some serious inspiration from this guy.
