94 - Weekly Round-up of Sports Technology news

What's trending this week (7th August 23)

Welcome sports innovators to the future of sport.

This is our new weekly round-up of what’s trending this week (7th August 2023)

  • Botanical inspired soccer kits

  • Black is back for soccer boots

  • AI Commentators here to stay?

  • Bleedkit focuses on a cycling niche and collaborates with Unior

  • New eco-sustainable pad from Elastic Interface

  • Kickstarter: Feier Somatosensory Slide Board

  • Kickstarter: ORR 14-in-1 All Seasons City & Country Hemp Adventure Jacket

1: BOTANICAL INSPIRED SOCCER KITS

Sounds madness but we genuinely think this is the start of a new trend. Botanical inspired kit designs, starting with a small soccer club in England - Walthamstow FC - and mid-19-century designer Morris & Co.

2: ADIDAS REVERTING BACK TO BLACK

Black boots will never go out of fashion, but adidas are aiming to bring it back with the X Crazyfast.

Additionally, the X Crazyfast includes a replacement of its past-used carbon soleplate insert. Instead, the boot opts for AEROPLATE technology, making the boot five grams lighter. This update provides enhanced comfort and responsiveness, while still offering the same propulsion and dynamic movement, with the stud design built to optimize traction during rapid acceleration.

3: ARE AI COMMENTATORS HERE TO STAY?

There are tons of articles in our inbox discussing the merits of AI commentators. Here is an overview of both sides.

As spectators dictate spend (on sports) this is an important topic as it is the central connection to the spectator during live sport.

4: BLEEDKIT x UNIOR

Bleedkit are an interesting brand because they picked a “large” niche in cycling - brake bleeding - and created a brand around it. Now large brands are looking to partner with them for their expertise (I assume on a royalty basis).

Brilliant way to start a business.

This brings me to the thought, are there any other niches to optimise?

  • Soccer studs

  • Air filled protection

  • Swimming goggle straps

  • Basketball compression

There are likely 1000’s of ideas and new brands here.

5: NEW ECO-SUSTAINABLE PAD FROM ELASTIC INTERFACE

The (I’m)Perfect pad programme aims to reduce material waste to zero by using discontinued fabrics, fabrics with aesthetic imperfections, and reintroducing fabrics that are unusable in the industrial textile supply chain. And all this can be achieved without affecting the pad’s premium levels of comfort and performance.

We always thought this is a clever (cheaper) way of introducing zero waste into sports brands - what is it again? Reuse, reduce, recycle.

6: FEIER SOMATOSENSORY SLIDE BOARD

Feier is the next-generation somatosensory slide board. It is equipped with smart motion-sensing chips embedded in the collision protection panels on both sides. These chips can detect the duration of your movements, calories burned, and the number of exercise sessions on the slide board. The data is automatically uploaded to the dedicated Feier App for recording and storage.

7: ORR 14-in-1 HEMP JACKET

Introducing the ultimate all-season adventure jacket that's packed with 14 functional features to make your adventures comfortable and hassle-free.
