81 - Lightweight Automatic Bike Pumps

Good function we just need more brands

Welcome sports innovators to the future of sport.

Let’s talk about mini automatic bike pumps and accessories.

FUTURE STAR

Fumpa

Fumpa Pumps wanted to develop a truly portable tyre pressure gauge that can be taken anywhere. So we came up with the ultimate key ring gauge!

The Fumpa Gauge is designed to clip onto your keyring or bag so you can take it anywhere. Its USB Type-C rechargeable so no need to worry about dangerous coin cell batteries going flat!

The Fumpa Gauge weighs just 30 grams and will read pressures up to 250psi (17.2 Bar). This makes it not only ideal for reading tyre pressures, but also MTB shocks and forks. The Gauge accepts both Presta and Schrader valves and has a clever pressure release mechanism to reduce pressures either very quickly or quite slowly.

GOT POTENTIAL

AirBank, Cycplus & Fumpa

Notice anything similar?

These are the top three bike pumps. They perform great but how many more small square mini pumps can one market handle.

Yes, a new market has been created, but it’s ripe for disruption for a brand to blow our socks off with style.

COACH CORNER

“A bike shop never fails because it bought too many bike tubes”. A sound piece of advice.

The reason this saying exists amongst bike shop owners (of which we are one of them), is that there are always going to be punctures, tyres, and tubes (unless tubeless or solid tyres get their way). It’s too tempting to stock plenty of bikes, but tyres & tubes are your bread & butter.

So, punctures are big business and the latest craze are mini auto-pumps. They are great, but boring. Typically square, fit in your backpack, charge before a ride style pumps. The only reason Airgo is not on-the-bench is because they are the latest and still produce the same thing. Boxey.

This is highlighted by the fact a hobbyist can create a miniature bike pump that looks like all of the above but on his own in his backyard. Blocky and as about as fun to use as a toaster. No reflection on the hobbyist, he has done a great job!

So what does this market need.

Where are the designs that fit onto the bike rather than in bag or back pocket?

Where are the stylists?

Look at Silca or Abbey tackling tools. Fumpa are close, their Fumpa Gauge knocks it out of the park with style, finesse and function, but give us more.

Don’t get us wrong, function is spot on: speed, easy to use and lightweight but take me in a direction I wouldn’t expect.

Or tackle a new market - women’s cycling is hot right now?!
