COACH CORNER

Yamaha were pioneers in this relatively new field. People are excited about swimming under water, travelling across large distances with very little effort enjoying the sites of the sea. And the good news is innovation has kept pace with this ever growing market.

There are at least over 50 underwater “scooter” brands and two that have caught our eye recently; Surando and Geneinno. Surando is taking us into a whole new world of not only powering up ourselves but also our equipment. They make it possible for us to connect our sea scooters to our surfboards, for example, to make them electric. Making that $350 seem a lot more palatable.

They aren’t the first but we think they have reached the right combination of speed, weight, power, charging time, and most importantly PRICE. This is an expensive market.

Geneinno have cracked the small and mighty leave it in the back of the car whilst travelling sea scooter, but with enough function to be useful.

But we are unsure about Seabob. They are popular but for us they are in a bit of no man’s land. Fast enough to make flying across the surface of the water exciting, but is that experience really worth 10k euros / dollars? It’s also ~30kg so not the easiest device to transport. And where do we use it? Lakes, yes? Oceans? Plenty of space, or so we think. Are there enough areas for a new sport which is too fast for the normal sea scooter, but too slow for jet-ski’s and too big & clunky for surfing? We will let the market decide.

If we were seabob, and didn’t want to create a new device. We would create a new sport around this technology and make it so fun and engaging that many would travel for tournaments. Is there a tough mudder style obstacle course for the water? Seabob would certainly be the quickest device for such a test.
