The future of recycling in the shoe industry

Welcome sports innovators to the future of sport.

Here are the top 15 interesting sports technology links today including:

Soft compostable shoes / sandals / slides

BioCir™ material by Balena, the first flexible and fully compostable thermoplastic material in the world, reducing toxic, fossil fuel-based materials used in the sports industry.

BioCir™ is an injectable, soft, and durable material that allows for products to reach their end of life responsibly in a biological recycling mechanism.

Balena first working product is the slide. Not bad design for science-buffs

Fully recyclable 3D-printed shoes for your feet

Now this is a brand we love.

3D Printed shoes have been around for a while, but Zellerfield just seem to be doing everything right. Design, manufacture, branding and marketing.

Their shoes are:

  • Adjustable fit and feel for your unique feet.

  • Fused 3D lattice with no stitching, glue, or weak points.

  • Machine washable, quick-drying and odour resistant.

  • Automated printing replaces overseas factory and labour.

  • All footwear is printed to order so there’s no excess or waste.

  • Old pairs can be returned and fully recycled into new ones.

It's great that they have solved so many latent issues with footwear.

Orba, the world’s first biodegradable eco sneakers

New Zealand eco-footwear startup Orba says it has created the world’s first biodegradable eco sneakers. The shoes are designed to fully fall apart and decompose at the end of their life, leeching no toxins into the soil. They have been created to address an alarming issue, that of billions of shoes ending up in landfill each year.

Scan your heart with this wearable ultrasound device

Ultrasound can provide detailed images of your heart, but devices have been impractical for outdoor use.

Step-in researchers from Department of Nanoengineering, University of California San Diego.

They have developed a wearable ultrasound patch that provides real-time heart imagery, even while you're in motion. It also uses deep learning to automatically calculate ventricle volume and generate performance stats. You'd know your cardiac output at any given moment.

This could be great for quick response cardiac issues on the field of play - #prayfordamarhamlin

It turns out that eSports gamers are moving towards (proper?!) nutrition, rather than energy drinks and supplements are gaining traction in the community.

Sports Science Quote of the Day

Skeletal muscle fiber-type composition (ie, muscle fiber typology [MFT]) is classified according to contractile speed as slow twitch (ie, type I) or fast twitch (ie, type II). The aim of this systematic review is to (1) characterize the MFT of team-sport athletes and (2) examine associations between MFT and physical and sporting performance tasks.

We have been investigating glucose monitoring, and there was a time when we all believed that glucose monitoring could be part of a smart watch. Well, it appears that today's patches supersede any previous technology in terms of functionality and accuracy versus portability.

Dexcomm, Abbott & Nutrisense are certainly leading the pack and it will be interesting to see how smart watch suppliers integrate with medical device companies like these as we move towards monitored preventive health.
